It’s just really cool. I think of all the adjectives to describe indie style right now – you’d have to go with those. Of course, it’s also complex, while highly simplified, all about fit while completely dependent on shape, and easily identifiable while extremely diverse. Indie style consistently pushes its boundaries and finds new ways to make classic pieces cool, and very sexy, and all the while looking totally fall-out-of-bed effortless. Right now - we’ve gotta talk about the plaid shirt – and awesome gladiator sandals.
The plaid shirt has never been so excellent. Both guys and girls are rocking it out like bona fide mountain-men in flannel and all. Bold checks and classic camping colours define this popular trend. I’m not surprised it made its way into indie style’s inventory; the plaid check (especially in red and black) alludes to classic punk rock, while the cut of the ‘button-down’ can be moulded into anyone’s favourite shirt. Girls: wear it big and grab a braided belt for your waste, or rock it fitted with some kick ass skinny jeans. My favourite sleeve is the three quarter length, although we can go long on this one as well. I’ve also seen some excellent plaid dresses walking around; you gotta love when they include an empire waste drawstring. Guys, us girls like it when you roll up the sleeves a bit. You can’t really go wrong as long as it’s not too oversized – but for the love of God don’t tuck it in and button it all the way to the top. Unless you enjoy resembling Tim the Tool Man Taylor. And not getting laid.
